Language  Language is an important and powerful tool. The language or wording used in polls can have impact on the conclusions drawn from such polls as it can affect the answers that one gets to the questions that are asked. There are several examples of polls in which different question wording can cause different answers. An example of this is that in one set of polls, it was found that the wording of possible answer choices affected the approval ratings for President Obama. People were given the choice of either 'approving' or 'disapproving' his performance. The ratings were much better than when people were given the choice of 'approving strongly', 'approving somewhat', 'disapproving somewhat' or 'disapproving strongly'. Reason  There is indeed a logic behind scientific discovery. In order to start an investigation you need a hypothesis (reason) and once you evaluate it, you use reason to justify your founding. Once i

Facts & Theories

Image
“Facts are needed to establish theories but theories are needed to make sense of facts.” Facts: A fact is a thing that is known or proved to be true. Theories: A theory can also be viewed as a hypothesis. It is a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained. S ense of facts: develop/give meaning of the fact/be aware of the information you are providing A claim suggests that without facts, theories cannot be produced. This is true and thus there is no argument to counter this. All theories are based upon facts, we see this in physics and even in history. For example, the second world war started due to a number of reasons. Each must include facts otherwise they are just assumptions.  “Science is built of facts the way a house is built of bricks: but an accumulation of facts is no more science than a pile of bricks is a house” Henri Poincaré “Don't believe the results of experi

Scientific Method

Image
Observation, reason and experiments combine to form The Scientific Method. As said in an earlier blog post, the scientific method is required in order to learn about the world. When completing an experiment, it needs to be repeated many times in order to see if the results match the hypothesis and to what extent. Scientist have the tendency to show the opposite of a theory, which is called falsification. This is because the scientists who came up with these theories no longer exist and were never part of the ordinary people. Also, a lot has changed over time such as the rapid growth in technology. It is important to go back and see if such theories were actually correct, as lots of the scientists used their imagination. Even thought theories exist for a long period of time, it doesn't secure anything.  The following video is a ted talk we watched in class, which will hopefully allow you to further understand the scientific method:  1st Claim: An example of a first cl

Natural Sciences

Natural Sciences play a very important role in our lives, but many people question what exactly they are and why they are important. Natural sciences are a part of science that specifically deal with our physical world. A few examples of this are physics, chemistry, and biology. Natural sciences enable us to help understand and learn more about the world surrounding us. Because of natural sciences we are able to constantly develop our knowledge of the world we live in. The scientific method is mainly based upon hypothesis and observations. Before starting an experiment, we will need to create a hypothesis to see if the experiment will or will not support this.  An example of this will be: It is important that you come up with a hypothesis, ignoring the fact that it might be incorrect. The results of the experiment are compared with the hypothesis to see if they support it. Many experiments have been done by scientists int he past who have enabled us to learn about the wor

The meaning of words -feminism

What is the role of language in creating and reinforcing social distinctions, such as class and gender? Words are powerful tools and language can be used to express your ideas and/or views in a powerful manner. This is what feminists continue to do when it comes down to reinforcing social distinctions. It includes body language, which can be affect every aspect of our life. Language is often considered to be the deciding factor when individuals from different regions of the world come together. The language we use is most commonly the representation of our thoughts, perspectives, and feelings based on the situation we are dealing with. This use of language could automatically determine our view on ethnicity, class and gender. Basically, language is the base for our social distinctions. Without language, concepts will merge and there will not be any social distinctions. In daily life we utilise thousands of languages. The nuances are as a guide for our reactions due to how interpret

Tweeting rumours

Should politics be concerned with truth?  I do believe that to an extend it is morally appropriate/required that politics are concerned with truth, as politicians aim to improve a country for the better which can mainly be done while looking at the facts. However, most politicians are not concerned about the truth. They will speak from their mind whether such statements are 'true' or not, and whether or not it disrespects the public. The aim of politicians is to gain support and make sure they will be voted for. For example, we can all agree that Trump is loose with the truth. Also, as Will Rogers, an American actor, once said "If you ever injected truth into politics you have no politics". To what extend can political rhetoric be free of propaganda? Propaganda is information that is especially of a biased or misleading nature and used to promote a political point of view. For example, propaganda posters were used a lot during war. REFLECTION

For this presentation, Oday, Mohamed, and I joined together to form a group. We started off by researching several topics and real life situations. It was quite hard to decide on our idea as it would influence our future actions, or in this case presentation. After thinking of several ideas, we finally decided to go with "stem cell research" because it was an interesting and ongoing scenario. We then had to look for a real life situation and we found several ones. We chose to talk about the conventional protests in Denmark regarding the restrictions of embryonic stem cell research/development. The next step was to decide on which two Ways of Knowing and one Area of Knowing we were going to use that were appropriate for our topic stem cell research. After researching and looking further into the topic, we came to the conclusion to use reason and emotion as our Ways of Knowing and ethics as our Area of Knowing. Afterwards, we were asked to create a knowledge question. Each of
